"A romp.

Deft storytelling.”

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

"Enthralling. McKeen is perfectly placed to relay the antics of this decadent decade . . . because of his fine use of the English language. His words would most certainly draw a nod of approval from all those he writes about and clearly admires.

THE NEW YORK JOURNAL OF BOOKS

"Engrossing.”
KIRKUS REVIEWS

"Absorbing.”
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

“Make McKeen's tale your next trip to the island — and have a beer for me.”

True tales
of writers and pirates,
painters and potheads,
guitar pickers and drug merchants
in America’s southernmost city.

Key West was built on a foundation of tribal bones, individualism and prolific vice.

From the early days of pirates and wreckers, Key West has always attracted people on the fringes of culture. Often, “the fringes of culture” means artists. Hemingway moved to Key West and wrote his greatest work. It was refuge for Tennessee Williams.

For the generation coming of age in the 1970s – including Thomas McGuane, dubbed “the New Hemingway” by the press – it was a place to test drive the dreams of the 1960s and find their artistic voices.

Failed country singer Jimmy Buffett hit town,  found his identity and presented Key West to the world as “Margaritaville.”

Mile Marker Zero tells the story of these gifted artists in that dangerous paradise.
